STM8 (A, L, S)

Targets: Audio, Automotive, Communication & Wired, Computers & Peripherals, Consumer, Digital Power, General Purpose, Industrial, Medical, Mobile & Wireless, Motor Control, Security, Test & Measurement

The STMicroelectronics STM8 platform of 8-bit microcontrollers is based around the STM8 core, and it is manufactured using an ST-proprietary 130nm embedded non-volatile memory technology. The core includes a 3-stage pipeline, 16-bit index registers and stack pointer, 16-Mbyte linear address space, and a 32-bit memory interface. Devices in this platform support true data EEPROM with read while write, operation ranging from 1.65 to 5.5 V, as well as a design that incorporates low-power design features such as clock gating and low-power Flash with power-off capability. The platform includes devices with up to 256-kbytes of program memory, up to 128 pin packages, multiple internal clock sources, and 150 °C temperature range. The modular peripheral set enables compatibility across the families.

STMicroelectronics STM8A Block Diagram

The STM8A 8-bit microcontroller family targets automotive applications with a focus on reliability, application robustness, and low system cost. The integrated true data EEPROM features top-notch endurance and data retention throughout the full temperature range. Its extended temperature range up to 150 °C ambient temperature makes the STM8A suitable for automotive 8‑bit applications. The software and pin-out compatible parts offer memory sizes from 8- to 128-kbytes in 24- to 80-pin packages. All of the STM8A devices operate at 3 V to 5.5 V in the extended temperature range. Internal supervisor circuits include power-on RESET, supply brown-out RESET, as well as window and standard watchdog timers. The integrated, factory-trimmed RC oscillators run at 16 MHz and 128 kHz.

STMicroelectronics STM8L Block Diagram

The STM8L ultra-low-power, ultra-low-voltage 8-bit microcontroller family combines a high-performance STM8 8-bit core with advanced analog functions on an optimized proprietary ultra-low-leakage process. The family features more than 50 devices that operate at 1.65 to 3.6 V and deliver scalable performance down to 350nA static power (with SRAM and context retention) and 150 µA/MHz run mode dynamic current. STM8L offers several lines of devices that are software, pin-to-pin, and peripheral compatible. The STM8L101 is the entry point, which is cost optimized in an ultra-small footprint. The STM8L151 comprises feature-rich devices. The STM8L152 adds an LCD-segment driver to the STM8L151 feature set. The STM8L162 adds 128-bit encryption (AES) to the STM8L152 feature set.

STMicroelectronics STM8S Block Diagram

The STM8S family is a new generation of 8-bit microcontrollers offering up to 20 MIPS performance from its advanced STM8 core. Its 130nm embedded non-volatile memory and peripherals support accurate control and monitoring in products such as home appliances, HVAC systems, industrial automation, power tools, personal-care equipment, and systems for power control and management. Developers can choose the STM8S10x Access Line with 16 MHz CPU frequency and up to 32-kbyte Flash, or the STM8S20x Performance Line, which operates at 24 MHz and up to 128-kbyte Flash. Package options range from small form factor 20- to 80-pin packages.

A complete set of development tools includes free firmware libraries, free ST microcontroller Toolset, compilers (Cosmic, IAR and Raisonance), new EWSTM8 IAR Embedded Workbench and low cost in-circuit debuggers (RLink and ST-LINK). ST's open-source touch-sensing software library transforms any STM8S microcontroller into a capacitive touch-key controller enabling developers to combine touch sensing functions, such as touch keys, wheels or sliders.
