The 16-bit S12 XE-series embedded controller targets automotive multiplexing and generic auto body applications. The S12XE family features include an MPU (Memory Protection Unit) and Error Correction Code (ECC) on the Flash memory together with enhanced EEPROM functionality (EEE), an enhanced XGATE, a Frequency Modulated Locked Loop (IPLL) and a faster ATD. It features an enhanced version of the performance-boosting XGATE co-processor which is programmable in "C" language. It also features an enhanced MSCAN module which, when used in conjunction with XGATE, delivers FULL CAN performance with virtually unlimited number of mailboxes and retains backwards compatibility with the MSCAN module featured on existing S12 products. There is a high level of compatibility between the S12XE and S12XD families.

The 16-bit S12 XD-series embedded controller is designed for automotive body electronics applications. The S12XD includes up to 512-kbytes of Flash, up to 32-kbytes of RAM, up to 4-kbytes bytes of EEPROM, six asynchronous serial communication interfaces (SCI), three serial peripheral interface (SPI), an 8-channel IC/OC enhanced capture timer, an 8-channel, 10-bit analog-to-digital converter, a 16-channel, 10-bit analog-to-digital converter, an 8-channel pulse-width modulator (PWM), five CAN 2.0A, B software compatible modules (MSCAN12), two Inter-IC Bus blocks and a Periodic Interrupt Timer. The S12XD has full 16-bit data paths throughout. The non-multiplexed expanded bus interface available on the 144-pin versions allows an easier interface to external memories. The S12XD is available several package and temperature options like 144-pin LQFP, 112-pin LQFP or 80-pin QFP and -40°C to 85°C, -40°C to 105°C or -40° to 125°C
